UFC 331 | Joshua Van Defeats Alexandre Pantoja

09/23/2026 3 Min Read

Joshua Van Defeats Alexandre Pantoja, and This Time There’s No Asterisk on It

Nine months ago, Joshua Van became a UFC champion in the strangest way possible: a freak elbow injury 26 seconds into his first meeting with Alexandre Pantoja, over before it ever really started. Every doubt that came with that win got answered on Saturday night.

At UFC 331 in Los Angeles, Joshua Van defeats Alexandre Pantoja across five full rounds of a genuine Fight of the Year contender, closing out one of the best cards of the year with a performance that left zero room for asterisks.

How Joshua Van Defeats Alexandre Pantoja Over Five Rounds

This one had every phase of a championship fight packed into it. Pantoja came out aggressive, taking Van down early and mixing in heavy punches and knees in a fiery first-round exchange, only for Van to answer back with a slicing elbow of his own. His corner had a simple message between rounds: stop brawling with this guy, and let the skill set take over.

Van listened. He started peppering Pantoja with a sharp left jab in round two and rocked him with a clean combination in round three, gradually shifting the entire tempo of the fight in his favor. Pantoja still found moments, especially in round one and round four, when he got the fight to the mat and racked up nearly ten minutes of total control time across the bout. But Van did enough in the striking exchanges and even dropped Pantoja in round five, and when the scorecards were read (49-46, 49-47, 50-45), there was no debate left.

What This Win Actually Proves

Van’s post-fight message said it all: a lot of people called his first win an accident, and this time, nobody gets to say that. At 24 years old, he becomes the first fighter from Myanmar to hold undisputed UFC gold, and he’s now defended that title twice, first against Tatsuro Taira back in May, and now against the same former champion who many felt deserved a cleaner shot at reclaiming it.

For Pantoja, the loss is a genuinely tough pill. It’s the first two-fight losing streak of his career, and he was vocal afterward about feeling underappreciated despite a resume that includes wins over Manel Kape, Brandon Royval, Brandon Moreno, and Kai Kara-France. He made it clear he still believes he’s the best fighter in the world and wants another crack at Van more than ever.

Why This Fight Matters Beyond the Result

Flyweight has quietly become one of the most entertaining divisions in the sport, and this fight is exactly why. Two elite technicians pushed each other for 25 straight minutes with the title on the line, and neither man let up until the final horn. That’s the kind of performance that shuts down lazy narratives about smaller weight classes being less exciting than the heavyweights.

It also cements Van as a legitimate long-term champion rather than a fighter who got lucky once. Beating Pantoja decisively, on beyond-doubt terms, is the exact kind of statement a young champion needs to make his reign feel earned.

The Rest of a Stacked UFC 331 Card

This fight capped off a night that was already delivering fireworks. Earlier on the main card, Arman Tsarukyan closed the show early against Mauricio Ruffy with a first-round elbow knockout, a result you can read the full breakdown of in our Tsarukyan versus Ruffy recap. Elsewhere, Sean Sharaf produced one of the biggest shocks of the year by finishing heavyweight prospect Gable Steveson in just 12 seconds, and Patricio Pitbull needed only a little longer to stop Dooho Choi.

Between the finishes and the five-round classic that closed it out, UFC 331 is going to be remembered as one of the deepest cards of the year.
