Tsarukyan vs. Ruffy Is the Fight Nobody Called & That’s Exactly Why UFC 331 Is Must Watch

August 25, 2026 4 Min Read

Tsarukyan vs. Ruffy Wasn’t the Plan & Which Is Exactly Why It’s the Fight to Watch

Sometimes the best fights on a card aren’t the ones anyone circled six months out. They’re the ones that show up because something else fell apart. That’s the story behind Arman Tsarukyan vs. Mauricio Ruffy, a five-round lightweight eliminator that landed on the UFC 331 card almost by accident and immediately became one of the most dangerous matchups of the fall.

How We Actually Got Here

For weeks, the expected story was a rematch. Tsarukyan beat Charles Oliveira by split decision at UFC 300 back in 2024, and everyone assumed round two was coming, this time with Oliveira’s BMF title attached. Then real life intervened Oliveira’s teammate passed away suddenly, and the rematch plans fell apart in the middle of fight camp.

The UFC didn’t wait around. Days later, Mauricio Ruffy’s name was attached instead, and just like that, the co-main event of UFC 331 became a completely different fight one that arguably tells you more about the state of the lightweight division than the original matchup ever would have.

Arman Tsarukyan: Elite, but Not Without Baggage

There’s no debating the talent. Tsarukyan sits at #2 in the official UFC lightweight rankings with a professional record of 23-3, and his résumé includes a win over a former champion in Oliveira along with a highlight-reel submission finish over Dan Hooker this past November. He made his UFC debut against Islam Makhachev back in 2019  a fight he lost, but one that earned him respect for pushing a future champion to the limit as a short-notice replacement.

What’s kept Tsarukyan out of a title shot isn’t his skill set. It’s everything around it. He withdrew from a lightweight title fight against Makhachev on a single day’s notice back in January 2025, and UFC president Dana White made his frustration with him public earlier this year, saying flatly he wasn’t thrilled with how things had gone. Add in a lengthy layoff and some off-camera incidents that made headlines for the wrong reasons, and you’ve got a fighter with genuine top-three talent who still has something to prove to the people running the show.

This fight is that proof, whether he asked for it or not.

Mauricio Ruffy: The Knockout Threat Nobody Wants to Face Right Now

If you’re not deep into the lightweight rankings, Ruffy is the name about to change that. He walks in with a 14-2 record built almost entirely on violence 13 of his wins have come by knockout, and 9 of those were first-round finishes. That’s not a guy who’s trying to survive five rounds. That’s a guy who’s trying to end the conversation early.

His most recent win is the one that got him this booking. Ruffy knocked out veteran Michael Chandler in the first round at UFC Freedom 250, bouncing back from a submission loss to Benoit Saint-Denis in the process. It was the kind of statement finish that forces matchmakers to take notice, and it clearly worked.

Ruffy has been open about what this fight means to him, saying plainly that a win here sends him straight into title contention. For a fighter who was on the outside of the rankings’ top ten not long ago, that’s not overconfidence. It’s just math beat the #2 guy in the division, and there’s nowhere else to go but up.

Why This Fight Is a Legitimate Style Clash

This isn’t just about records on paper. It’s a genuine gamble for both men:

  • Tsarukyan brings a suffocating wrestling base, five-round championship experience, and enough power in his hands to finish fights outright but he’s fighting off a long layoff and has to prove his head is fully in it.
  • Ruffy brings some of the scariest first-round finishing power in the division and total confidence, but he’s never faced someone who can drag him into deep water and grind him out over 25 minutes the way Tsarukyan can.

If Ruffy can catch Tsarukyan early, this fight ends fast and dramatically. If Tsarukyan can survive the opening exchanges and get this fight to the mat, his ceiling in the later rounds is arguably higher than anyone else in the division not currently holding gold.

What’s on the Line

This isn’t just a co-main event for the sake of filling out a card. Both men understand exactly what a win does for them. For Tsarukyan, it silences the noise about his reliability and puts him right back in the title conversation. For Ruffy, a win doesn’t just make him a contender it makes him the story of the entire lightweight division heading into 2027.

UFC 331 takes place September 19 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, headlined by the flyweight title rematch between Joshua Van and Alexandre Pantoja, with Tsarukyan vs. Ruffy as the featured five-round co-main event.

Whoever walks out of that cage first is probably one win away from a title shot. That’s not hype. That’s just where the lightweight division stands right now.
