Tom Aspinall Vacates UFC Heavyweight Title

Tom Aspinall Vacates UFC Heavyweight Title, and an Entire Division Just Got Turned Upside Down

Some injuries end a fight. This one just ended a title reign that never really got the chance to start.

Tom Aspinall vacates the UFC heavyweight title after revealing that a sparring accident caused fresh damage to his right eye, less than a year after his first defense of the undisputed belt ended in chaos. It’s a gut-punch of an announcement, and it instantly reshuffles one of the sport’s most important divisions.

How We Got Here

Aspinall’s undisputed reign began in June 2025 after Jon Jones retired, handing him the belt he’d already been chasing as interim champion since late 2023. His first shot at defending it outright came against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 in October 2025, and it ended almost before it began an eye poke in the first round forced a no-contest, with Aspinall unable to continue. The UFC officially ruled it accidental, though Aspinall has since said he suspects otherwise.

What followed was a brutal cycle: multiple surgeries, infections, and a recovery timeline that kept getting pushed back. By this past June, things looked like they were finally turning a corner. Aspinall said he was back in full training, had a fight date agreed for a Gane rematch, and even reacted enthusiastically on his own YouTube channel when Gane recaptured the interim title by beating Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250.

Then a sparring accident undid all of it.

Why Tom Aspinall Vacates the Belt Now

In an Instagram post announcing the decision, Aspinall didn’t hide how difficult this was for him. He explained that he’d been back sparring and feeling ready to compete when the accident caused further damage to his right eye, leaving him unable to get medically cleared. Rather than let the situation drag on any longer, Tom Aspinall vacates the title on his own terms, saying plainly that he didn’t want to hold the entire heavyweight division hostage to his recovery.

That’s a genuinely selfless way to handle it. Aspinall could have sat on the belt indefinitely while doctors figured things out. Instead, he specifically asked the UFC to let him be the one to announce it, framing the decision around giving other heavyweights the chance to compete for a title he physically can’t defend right now.

What This Means for Ciryl Gane

The most immediate winner here is Ciryl Gane. With Aspinall stepping aside, Gane is set to be elevated from interim champion to undisputed titleholder the same man whose eye poke started this entire chain of events now inherits the belt without having to fight for it outright. It’s a strange, almost poetic way for this rivalry to resolve, at least for now.

Whether Gane gets to enjoy that status without an asterisk depends on what happens next. Plenty of contenders in a deep heavyweight division will want a shot at proving the belt should be earned in the cage rather than handed over by circumstance.

The Bigger Picture

This is exactly the kind of shakeup that reshapes a division overnight, the same way Valentina Shevchenko’s title vacancy recently blew open the women’s flyweight picture and sent Alexa Grasso back into title contention. Heavyweight just got its own version of that chaos, and the ripple effects new contenders, rebooked fights, a possible Gane-Aspinall trilogy down the line are only getting started.

Aspinall was careful to make one thing clear in his statement: this isn’t retirement. He says he’ll be back the moment he’s medically able to compete again. For a fighter who waited years just to get his hands on an undisputed title, walking away from it voluntarily says a lot about the kind of champion he wanted to be, even without the belt.
