Ashton Jeanty Injury Update: Inside the Raiders’ Backfield Scramble

Ashton Jeanty Injury Update: Inside the Raiders’ Backfield Scramble

The Ashton Jeanty injury update everyone’s been refreshing their timelines for is finally here and honestly, it’s about as good as the Raiders could’ve hoped for after Sunday’s scary scene at practice.

Jeanty dove for a pass, landed awkwardly on his right leg, and had to be helped off the field without putting any weight on it. His teammates circled up and took a knee in prayer right there on the practice field. If you saw the clips, you know it looked bad. Really bad.

Turns out? The Raiders might have dodged a bullet.

What Actually Happened

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jeanty is believed to have suffered a sprained ankle not the type of injury that ends a season. Rapoport laid out the situation clearly on “The Insiders”: the sprain is believed to be low-ankle rather than high-ankle, which is the more favorable outcome, but he was blunt that Jeanty could still miss Week 1.

Schefter echoed that read on the Pat McAfee Show, calling it a “best case scenario” while cautioning it’s still “definitely something.” The exact recovery timeline is still being worked out, and sprained ankles can realistically take anywhere from one to six weeks to heal depending on severity so this is very much a week-to-week situation heading into the Raiders’ September 13 opener against Miami.

Why This Injury Is Such a Big Deal

Context matters here. Jeanty isn’t just any running back he was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Boise State, and he delivered from Day 1. As a rookie, he posted:

  • 975 rushing yards on 266 carries
  • 5 rushing touchdowns
  • 55 receptions for 346 yards and 5 more scores
  • 1,321 total scrimmage yards
  • A spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team

New head coach Klint Kubiak has built this offense to run through Jeanty, so any absence even a short one forces Las Vegas to lean on a backfield that suddenly looks a lot less settled than it did a week ago.

The Breakout Candidate This Injury Just Created

Here’s where it gets interesting for anyone building a roster-battle watchlist: fourth-round rookie Mike Washington Jr. was already alternating starting reps with Jeanty in practice before the injury happened. Across two preseason games, Washington has piled up 119 yards and turned heads doing it.

If Jeanty does miss time in September, Washington is next in line to carry the load with Dylan Laube, undrafted rookie Roman Hemby, and veteran Dare Ogunbowale rounding out the room. That’s exactly the kind of opportunity that turns a Day 3 pick into a name fantasy managers scramble to add.

Key Takeaways

  • The Ashton Jeanty injury update: a sprained ankle, believed low-ankle, not considered long-term
  • There’s a real chance Jeanty misses Week 1 against the Dolphins on September 13
  • Jeanty logged 1,321 scrimmage yards as a rookie after going No. 6 overall in 2025
  • Rookie Mike Washington Jr. is the clear next-man-up, fresh off a 119-yard preseason stretch

Our Take

This is precisely why roster-cutdown week is must-watch season for us: one practice-field moment can flip an entire depth chart’s storyline overnight. The Raiders were never going to cut Jeanty’s workload on purpose, but an ankle injury just handed Mike Washington Jr. a real audition and with the 53-man deadline landing Sunday, how Las Vegas manages this backfield over the next few days will say a lot about how much they trust their rookie. Keep an eye on Jeanty’s practice participation this week; that’s the single biggest tell for his Week 1 status.
